JOE ENGLAND AES SYSTEMS Within his commercial skills Joe has demonstrated a good understanding of HVAC fundamentals and design practices. The company consistently receives good college reports from Joe’s BTEC L3 tutor and has been nominated by NITAL Training & Development for their own trainee of the year award. Feedback from customers and consultants is outstanding, leading to further works being won based on the overall AES performance to which Joe has been an influencing contributor. |
ADRIAN LAISHLEY BMSi Adrian is new to the HVAC industry but is young, keen and very interested to learn about the industry. Adrian has shown great commitment to his studies and is always one of the first to ask questions in order to gain a better understanding of the subject. Adrian has proved to be a very popular student who is keen to progress within the industry. |
BEN RAINFORD BAS LTD Ben attained the highest examination marks during the last year on the BCIA Technical Training Scheme which gave him an average pass mark of 93% from his best three courses. He is a committed and hard working student who demonstrates a professional attitude to his studies. |
STEPHEN PARKER NOBBS & JONES Stephen Parker is currently on year 3 of his apprenticeship and during his time in the industry he has developed key skills in engineering by building control panels to the Nobbs and Jones specification. Stephen is committed to his studies and works hard to ensure he achieves the best possible grades. He is keen to understand the industry and picks things up very fast when being shown what to do by our more senior engineers. |

DANIEL WRIGHT ADT FIRE AND SECURITY Dan Wright is an exceptional BMS engineer. His dedication and commitment to getting the job done are without question. DES WEDLAKE BMSi Des Wedlake has twenty six years of experience in the field of BEMS Engineering Maintenance and support. He has worked as a BMS maintenance engineer, commissioning engineer and projects manager for Johnson Controls (4 years), TAC Satchwell (12 years) and BMSi (10 years), for clients such as National Westminster Bank, O2 and the Royal Society of Medicine. Des has built up a BEMS knowledge which is equally reflected by the outstanding client satisfaction in his work. |
DAVID GRAHAM CAMPBELL CONTROL SERVICES At a time when integration with IT and the internet was at its infancy, David proved a formidable and incisive engineer quickly absorbing the new technologies and providing integrated BMS solutions. His technical abilities work ‘hand in glove’ with his innate commercial knowledge; being able to convey technical know-how in an easy to understand format. Feedback from consultants has always been positive and David’s ability to interact on both the technical and the non-technical level is regularly commented upon. |
JEFF HOWLETT CENTRALINE BY HONEYWELL So many buildings and people have benefited from Jeff’s expertise that his influence in the industry is truly momentous, says Honeywell, which recognises internationally Jeff’s skills and experience place him among the best in the industry. Now in his 22nd year with Honeywell, Jeff is an invaluable member of the CentraLine engineering team. Jeff advises on product development, patiently assists partner companies when they need advice and support, and is a popular and successful trainer. |
KEN STEVENSON SIEMENS BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES Ken has been involved in the controls industry for over 40 years and during his career he has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience which he shares with his colleagues and customers to ensure that every project has the best solution. Ken has also paid special attention to promoting the use of energy saving controls and has recently worked on a project with Tesco to propose and implement projects which are forecast to save 40,000 tonnes of CO2. |

ASHDOWN CONTROL SERVICES Ashdown Controls is a fully independent BEMS system installer and delivers flexible, bespoke, cost effective BEMS system solutions. It has recently delivered a BEMS upgrade project which encompassed over 15 floors of office space linked up to a new high speed BEMS network controlling main plant and over one thousand energy efficient on floor terminal units. Even though the school’s previous BMS and its peripheral equipment was supplied by a different manufacture, P A Collacott has utilized the existing sensors and cabling within the new installation, leading to impressive savings in capital cost and installation time. |

VIRTUAL BUILDING MANAGER BMSi BMSi’s entry is based on their role as a “Virtual Building Manager”, an energy project carried out in partnership with Boots the Chemist over the last twelve months. Boots were very keen to reduce energy costs but also their organisation’s CO² production to help meet their corporate, financial and environmental objectives. This project has produced annual savings to Boots of £900,000.00 in the first twelve months, which equates to a reduction in CO² of approximately 6,000 Tonnes per year. |
ENERGY SAVING FOR SONY DALKIA Designed for Sony UK Technology Centre Pencoed, Dalkia's control system & improvement activities will support £1million cost savings over 3 years, improve temperature control of critical areas, reducing electricity use, emission’s and enhancing environmental conditions. The new system provides accurate control, matching user requirements of a wide range of energy plant including: boilers, heating, heat distribution pumps, hot and cold water, air handling, chillers, extract fans, internal and external lighting, fire alarms and gas supply controls. |
RESIDENTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS R&T GEBÄUDEANLAGENTECHNIK R&T Gebäudeanlagentechnik, a German CentraLine Partner has reduced energy consumption by a massive 30% in a block of 50 flats with an existing district heating system, using CentraLine by Honeywell. The housing management company, WHG, is astounded by the results, having challenged R&T to reduce consumption by a respectable 10%, for a modest investment in the BMS. Yet residents always have as much warmth and hot water as they need, right around the clock. |
CARBON SAVINGS AT RBS TREND CONTROL SYSTEMS |
| RBS and Trend collaborated to deliver energy savings and BEMS best practice across 107 RBS properties. By applying a range of controls adjustments across different buildings and plant environments, Trend achieved savings of 6,578,000 kWh (2,600 tonnes CO2) exceeding RBS’ initial expectations with a payback of less than six months. Gaining an in-depth understanding of each individual building from the 107 group, Trend realised a further 2,981,000 kWh of energy reductions (1,681 tonnes CO2) through additional controls measures including VSDs and strategy reworking. |

TREND SERVICES (CENTRAL) Trend has become an integral part of the team at Land Rover. The introduction of the Trend iMAT remote monitoring system onto the site has provided each of the building owners with energy management tools that will highlight areas of waste, particularly during unoccupied periods. |
TREND SERVICES (SCOTLAND) Within 48 hours of the July terrorist attack at Glasgow Airport, the Trend team had effected repairs and replaced damaged equipment, enabling the main plant to be back up and running again which in turn assisted in the speedy re-opening of the airport. This rapid and effective response underlines Trend’s commitment to providing the best possible service to the Airport. Trend’s on-site personnel are considered by the Glasgow Airport Engineering Management Team to be an integral part of their Work Services Department. |

This year, the Judges’ Special Award has a particular emphasis on recognising a commitment to training. The BCIA has worked closely for a number of years with the ECA to provide some of the most significant training courses for our sector. The important of training for our industry can never be underestimated – without it our businesses cannot grow. That’s why all the nominations for the BCIA 2008 Judges Special Award are being recognised for their commitment, personal and professional, to supporting high quality training and ensuring that we have a new generation of experts coming up through the industry. |
ASHDOWN CONTROLS The judges felt that Ashdown has shown an exemplary and commendable commitment to training its staff over many years. The company introduced the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme ten years ago, allowing its young engineers to attend college or university on day release. Ashdown has also been closely involved with Trend’s apprentice scheme. All Ashdown staff are actively encouraged to take up training opportunities at every level of their career- from NVQs and BCIA courses to Honours degrees and MBAs – with 10% of staff in training at any one time. |
KEITH DOHERTY Keith has worked with the BCIA and ECA for many years, ensuring that hundreds of trainees achieve their best. This is more than a job for Keith, who continues to show a personal commitment to high quality training. He has been instrumental in ensuring that the ECA/BCIA courses are highly regarded, and last year awarded the 1000th training certificate. Keith is an experienced and knowledgeable engineer who is helping our industry to grow by sharing his knowledge with others. |
TREND CONTROLS Trend Control Systems is supporting the long-term interests of the building services industry through an ongoing campaign to attract apprentices. Its efforts this year resulted in 50 apprenticeships in Building Services Engineering. Trend’s training scheme is also geared to helping its partner businesses (including Ashdown Controls) and 26 of its apprentices are employed by Trend partners. In 2007, Trend also collaborated with Central Sussex College to bring lecturers into its business to help them incorporate real world knowledge into the curriculum. The judges felt that Trend should be recognized for its commitment to training which is having a positive impact on the wider industry. |
